IPL vs. JPLT20

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) filed a law suit in November, 2017 against Grace India Sports Pvt. Ltd. (GISPL), claiming that the later tried to start IPL like tournament for junior cricketers. BCCI alleged that the GISPL has named its cricket league ‘Junior Indian Premier League’ or ‘JIPL’. BCCI claimed that by using the mark ‘Indian Premier League’ or ‘IPL’, the GISPL is infringing the trademark.


Justice SJ Kathawalla of Hon’ble Bombay High Court, with its order has imposed injunction upon GISPL from infringing the trademark of BCCI and has further banned GISPL from using the domain name, and


GISPL had approach BCCI for approval to organise a tournament for junior cricket players under the trademark Indian Junior Players League Twenty 20. But instead of waiting for the approval the GISPL went on to launch the above named tournament without the approval. 


Hon’ble Bombay High Court has passed an interim order in favour of BCCI for the infringement of its Trademark ‘Indian Premier League’ or ‘IPL’.
